If your project's sponsor is not engaged, you have three options:
The ideal situation is to get the sponsor engaged. There are several techniques you can use to do this. For example, you can complete the Sponsor Assessment tool and review the results with the sponsor. Together you can create an action plan to address areas of concern. As you go into that discussion, be prepared to describe what the sponsor has to gain from active participation in your change and clearly address risk areas to that individual. Schedule regular follow-up meetings to discuss progress, and be sure to recognize improvements. |

Note that your team should do everything they can to make it as easy as possible for the sponsor to participate. For example, if you need your sponsor to speak at an employee event, create their slides and speaking notes, arrange the facilities, etc. so that all they have to do is show up and talk. If all else fails, you should not shy away from having a difficult discussion with your sponsor where you remove yourself from the project because it is not set up for success. |
